The New Year marks a perfect time to start new routines, and no doubt many people will have made a resolution to lead a healthier life. Choosing to lead that healthier lifestyle can mean a lot of changes, the need for regular exercise can’t be ignored, nor can watching what foods you eat in order to lose those few extra pounds. Every bit as important is the need to ensure that you are drinking the right liquids and hydrating your body properly to support your efforts. Staying hydrated, even during winter’s cold months is important for your wellbeing and as water helps to curb your appetite, it’s a healthy aid to reducing your calorie intake. Whilst looking to maintain your healthy lifestyle throughout 2012 by opting to drink water rather than sugary or caffeinated drinks you are making one of your more important decisions, also one of the easiest. At home, in the office or on the move, make water your drink of choice, it is always ready to refresh and quench your thirst.

AquaPoint provides great tasting water and when water tastes better, it’s more likely to be consumed. So make sure you have a supply of AquaPoint water in your place of work. Fitness experts recommend staying hydrated throughout the day. What better way to do just that than to choose AquaPoint bottled water when it’s time for a drink?

Despite all sections of the Britsh media predictably reporting doom & gloom everyone at AquaPoint is looking forward to the new year, with the “buzz word” around the water cooler being POSITIVE. In times of recession, double dip or any other type what else would any business want to be other than POSITIVE?

No nonsense from the team at AquaPoint, it’s a new year and a new canvass from which we intend to create a masterpiece. Now it’s not often the terms masterpiece and mains fed cooler can be used in the same sentence but I’m sure you see where we are coming from.

There are some great things for us all to look forward to including our charitable activities which will change a little in 2012. Whilst continuing our support of CLIC Sargent we are also committed to supporting the fundraising efforts of our Ops Director Martin Harman see http://bit.ly/yQcOQu

There is also a “buzz” going around the office about our involvement with The BIG Gorilla. Follow him on Twitter @biggorillaUK we’re sure everyone will be seeing him throughout the year as he raises funds for charities, community groups, deserving individuals and the revolutionary education programme being put into schools by StepTeam.org.

Of course we won’t be forgetting our core business and will be busy selling and promoting the benefits of water and in particular quality drinking water to companies throughout our regions. Ensuring that employers, their staff and visitors have access to the very best drinking facilities.

So all in all 2012 really is “Another year to look forward to” Happy New Year to you all.

As I started writing this article the countdown to Christmas stood at 22 days 8 hours 42 minutes and 7 seconds and I just wasted another 4 seconds reading what I had already written.

Not wishing to fall foul of the Secret Santa, I nontheless can’t help feeling a sense of dread as the discussions around the AquaPoint Water Coolers turns to everything “festive”. We are now at 22 days 8 hours 39 minutes and 39 seconds.

I can not help it and find myself cringing as the talk revolves around who’s buying what for whom, where pressies are going to be hidden, who’s coming over for Christmas dinner, where to go to on Boxing day, the neighbours excessive Crimbo light display, who to send cards to, who not to send cards to, Turkey, Goose or Pork, Xmas Pudding or not. I’m left thinking credit crunch – what credit crunch?

To top it all I’m made to feel guilty for not “entering into the spirit” and find myself being lectured on why it really is a magical time of the year before being asked why I don’t get excited wrapping pressies. It’s all too much and we are only two days into the coundown which now stands at 22 days 8 hours 32 minutes and 50 seconds.

Is it just me or are others fed up with the whole thing already. I find myself privy to discussions at the Water Cooler regarding which X Factor singer is getting more lines in the M&S christmas advert song, er did I miss something?

I have great sympathy for our sales director who yesterday found himself waiting for a prospective client who was 25 minutes late for their appointment. Now during that waiting time the poor fellow was subjected to cold cups of tea and Johnny Mathis singing “When a child is born”. Apparently this was quickly followed by Andy Williams, Let it Snow, let it snow, let it snow, try getting that out of your head after hearing it. He informs me that he was almost ready to throw in the towel when Roy Wood and Wizard began yet another rendition of “I wish it could be Christmas Every Day” but thankfully his appointment turned up to rescue him. 22 days 8 hours 22 minutes and 20 seconds & counting.

So yet another Christmas countdown sees us into the month of December and with only 22 days 8 hours 20 minutes and 14 seconds to go I suppose there is only one question left to answer – Are you excited?

AquaPoint Operations Director Martin Harman continues to get the message out in support of his campaign to raise awareness about Heart Arrhythmia.

Amid great excitement Martin set up an area in the sales office upstairs for staff members to join him for their very own ‘ Pulse Check’ and offered lots of information for them to take away with them so that they could practice on their family & friends. Of course there was the usual “banter” flying around with several colleagues expressing suprise that a certain member of staff even had a pulse, it’s a tough school at AquaPoint. Martin was quick to thank his colleagues explaining that “their support no matter how big or small, will help to raise awareness of how a simple pulse check could help save a life”.

The Pulse Check Guide teaches YOU how to take YOUR pulse, what it means and when YOU should seek further advice for an irregular heartbeat.

Why should you support Know Your Pulse?

The problem…

In the UK:

More than 2 million people are affected by an arrhythmia

120,000 people experience unexplained loss of consciousness each year

100,000 sudden cardiac deaths each year; the equivalent of 250 people each day. Sudden cardiac death leads to more deaths worldwide than breast cancer, lung cancer and AIDS combined

30 per cent of adults and 39 per cent of children are misdiagnosed with epilepsy when in fact they have a heart rhythm disorder

The easiest way to detect an arrhythmia is to feel the pulse

However even we were slightly suprised to see that the humble office water cooler bottle is being deployed in the latest military hardware to deal with hostage situations and terrorist threats. BCB International a company based in Cardiff has developed the Wall Breaker, a bizarre cannon that fires the water bottles into buildings at high speed. The firm is already exporting it to military and security forces worldwide.

This morning’s chat around the Water Cooler has been all about what “little Britney” or “young Dwayne ” has selected to wear for the annual pilgrimage through the neighbourhood.

Beleagured parents have already been counting the cost of the latest zombie suit, alien monster or witches gown and are hell bent on recouping the outlay by plundering the neighbourhood for sweets and goodies that will keep the kids going for weeks.

As always you can expect the little darlings to arrive just as you have sat down for your evening meal and the familiar “rat a tat tat” on your front door will see you summoned to face those who expect to be handed high quality confectionary or at least get to dip their little mits in the Quality Street tin.

Those foolish enough to request “trick” rather than “treat” and send the kids on their way can expect to spend the next few nights cleaning their car windows of various sticky and indeed messy substances that usually include egg yokes.

Yes it’s another lovely tradition that has got completely out of hand and become a retailers salvation in the run up to the next assault – Christmas

Happy Halloween

He also hopes to represent his country at the World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, next October.

Martin’s elevation to the GB ranks has been far from straightforward as he suffers from atrial fibrillation – a type of abnormal heart. The condition was diagnosed following an operation in 2006 which was believed to have caused the first episode of the illness.

Martin, a member of York Triathlon Club, competes in the Olympic distance, which comprises a gruelling 1,500-metre swim, 40-kilometre cycle and a 10k run.

Harman said: “While I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of the sport, it is also my way of proving to myself that atrial fibrillation may well live with me, but it will not live ‘for me’.”

Martin has set up a blog detailing his training progress at triwithrhythm.blogspot.com as well as a Just Giving page for sponsorship and donations at www.justgiving.com/mharman

Many experts working in the nutritional field believe maintaining hydration is important for peak wellbeing and health. Water makes up about two-thirds of the body, and therefore has the potential to play a critical role in just about any bodily process one cares to mention. Like what? Well, the benefits of hydration (and the perils of dehydration) have been documented in a review published recently in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition [1].

The review actually does a very good job of summarising the role that water plays in the structure and function of the body. In particular, it highlights water’s role as a building material (water is present in each and every cell in the body, solvent (for nutrients like glucose and amino acids), and temperature regulator (by allowing sweating, which can dissipate heat from the body).

Water is also a carrier: it participates in the transporting of oxygen and nutrients to our tissues and, crucially, also carries waste products away too. Water helps the transfer of toxic by-products from the tissues, and assists their elimination from the body via, say, the urine and sweat. In this sense, water is essential for proper detoxification of the body. Put another way, too little water can lead to toxicity in the body which can impair wellbeing and contribute to ageing.

But how much water should we drink? Our fluid requirements are dictated by a multitude of factors including temperature, humidity, activity levels, our propensity to sweat and body weight. Because of this, it is very difficult to give blanket recommendations regarding water intake.

Perhaps the easiest way to gauge hydration status is to keep an eye on the colour of our urine. The usual advice given is to drink enough water to ensure that the urine is pale yellow throughout the course of the day.

Many would agree that people who take steps to improve their hydration almost always feel improvements in terms of their energy and wellbeing. Proper hydration will help to combat some everyday ills including headaches and constipation too. Keeping the body relatively free of toxins and a slowing of disease-causing and ageing processes are other potential motivations for keeping up a good intake of water.

Maintaining hydration easily is generally facilitated by ensuring that you have water by you. So, keep a bottle or a glass on your desk if at work and visit the water cooler regularly. Most individuals find themselves quite naturally reaching for water as long as it’s in front of them.

Romantic labels with waterfalls and mountain springs may be routine marketing in the bottled water industry, but the safest, purest and most consistent water sources are those drawn from aquifers deep underground that have been filtered through several hundred feet of rock.

There is no risk of contamination from agricultural chemicals or livestock. Collection tanks and long runs of pipework needed to collect some spring waters close to the surface on hillsides all require complex chemical cleaning routines to keep the water safe. The key question is: how well protected is the water source – is it collected deep underground or from near the surface?

Your staff deserve the safest water to drink.

AquaPoint Pure comes from a deep artesian spring located in beautiful North Yorkshire. It originates from a deep rock formation and is drawn from 394ft below ground. Because of its depth the limestone aquifer both protects and naturally filters the water. A light blend of natural minerals contributes to the great taste of our water.

Lifted to the surface through natural artesian pressure it enters our bottling plant directly above the source. We use no chemical treatments to the source pipework and there is no risk of bacteriological contamination. Aquapoint have the most modern bottling plant and the highest possible hygiene standards. Inspected and approved by the local Environmental Health Officer, our plant ensures our customers always have the safest, most delicious and consistent water to drink. Our rigorous quality control standards help us make sure that you will enjoy the same crisp, delicious water every time you take a drink from our watercoolers.

We also take great care that our bottling and distribution reflects our commitment to a sustainable and environmentally sound business. Centrally located in North Yorkshire for delivery to our customers in the North of England is very efficient with fewer haulage miles per bottle than many of our competitors.
